Snow and Christmas holiday!

Well we woke up yesterday morning to snow! I couldn't believe it. Alex was so excited and got really upset when it stopped snowing as he wanted 'Biggen piles of snow'. For some reason he isn't sleeping well again so is quite tired making for tricky moments in the evenings, although these party trumpets are considered to be great fun. Today was his nursery carol concert...he has been practicing Christmas songs since October, but when it came to it he sang the first song nicely including the actions (jumping up and down in the bumpy sleigh) and then burst into tears when everyone clapped (he still hates loud noises) and spent the rest of the concert on my lap, although he did sing the last song! I did manage to finish most of my grant stuff before Christmas which was a great relief, and the Research meeting I organised today went well which was good. It was followed by our Christmas lunch which was great fun. I now feel that I am ready for the Christmas holidays and am looking forward to having a few days next week for cleaning and the final arrangements. Crafting wise I have been making a couple of Christmas presents. This little pendant is for my boss who is a very elegant lady and tends to go for elegant simplicity in her jewellery. I hope she likes it! This necklace was for a friend who is into more funky and fun necklaces. I have never made pendents before so was pleased with how this came out (here is a close up of it). I hope you all have a great weekend.

Dips

I kicked off the Christmas season at work on Monday with the annual Christmas cooking competition, which this year was dips. I made a dip I nicknamed ‘Death by Garlic’ as the first version was far too garlicky. At the end of the day the final version came second out of the 12 dips that were entered (judged by everyone) so I was really chuffed. As usual there was a lot of joking and teasing and general laughter and fun which was lovely. Apart from that work is chaos as I am trying to finish off three grants by Friday – somewhat stressful! Alex is in much better form and we have had a lot of fun this week playing with his cars, and yesterday he decided he wanted to play with the camera. He doesn’t really want to aim it at anything, as what he was really interested in was the flash and got most upset when he accidentally switched the flash off! I think I have finished my Christmas shopping except the food so all that is left to do is to make the fudge, a couple of necklaces, and tags for the presents and of course to wrap all the presents (I haven't started that). On that note I also made my last Christmas card this week which followed the sketch and stash sketch. I used entirely old stash for this and it fits with the Sparkling winter theme from Kaboodle Doodles, Yuletide wishes from My Time to Craft, and the snow theme from Secret Crafter Saturday Challenge. These tags also fit with the snow theme and the dotty theme from Daring Cardmakers and are the first of many I have to make. I hope you all have a good week.

Christmas decorations!

Well we put up our Christmas decorations today so I am feeling all Christmassy. We actually have two Christmas trees - this little one in the dining room, and a larger one in the sitting room. We have also liberally spread tinsel round both rooms so it is all bright and sparkly. Alex like playing with the decorations although wasn't too sure about the whole idea of tinsel...as far as he was concerned the beads and tinsel should be on him not on the pictures or tree! We have made the most of the dry weather this weekend with a trip to our local park yesterday for Alex to play on his scooter followed by a trip to Endcliffe park today to feed the ducks. I think the ducks ate more bread than Alex, but I am not sure!
Crafting wise I have made two layouts, both of which fit with this weeks theme of gathering for Scrap and Stamp. The first one is of my 6th Birthday party and uses purple Onion stamps in the corner, and Basic Grey lemonade papers and embellishments. The journalling reads 'I am not sure why I have such a moody face in this photo of my 6th Birthday party. It may have had something to do with Anna and myself coming last in the three-legged race, or not doing very well in the apple game!'.
The next one uses the only existing photo of my 7th Birthday, which has darkened so much it is hard to make out everyone - I lightened it in photoshop, which has improved it from the original. This again uses Purple Onion Stamps (corner and journalling) and Basic Grey 'sugared' papers and elements, as well as three Making memories brads. This layout actually follows the layout from Unscripted Sketches. The journalling reads 'My school friends & best friends helping me celebrate my 7th birthday with a party at home which included lots of games followed by the birthday tea!'. As usual I would love to know what you think. Have a great week everyone!

Spots

Poor Alex, not only is he a spotty wonder, but he is thoroughly bored of being at home with Daddy all day and he doesn’t understand why he can’t go to nursery or see friends. That said, he hasn’t been too bad with the chicken pox, thank goodness. The itching has been comparatively minor and he keeps telling us that he has ‘lots of spots’ in a slightly surprised manner. He isn’t sleeping well due to a combination of a nasty cough that wakes him and itchiness when he wakes making it hard for him to get back to sleep. This means he is more tired than usual and inclined to cry at the slightest thing bless him. The majority of spots have scabbed over now so hopefully he can go back to nursery tomorrow which will please him.
I have had very little time for crafting this week, although I did manage to get all my Christmas cards written and posted. The one piece of crafting was this scrapbook layout of Christmas 1982 With a photograph of myself and my cousins staring up at the Christmas tree. The layout is based on this weeks sketch from pencil lines, and follows the theme of Christmas carol/song from CCC with the title being ‘Oh Christmas Tree’, and of Christmas foliage from My Time To Craft (trees and holly). The journaling reads ‘Christmas was usually spent with our cousins, Harry & Archie Massey. They usually came to our house from Christmas Eve until 27th Dec. We all had so much fun playing together'. I will also use this for the latest Quirky Crafts challenge. I would love to know what you think. Have a great weekend.

Chicken pox!

Apologies for not updating on Friday, but there was nothing to show as I was in London until late on Thursday and since then I have been frantically trying to sort out Christmas things while juggling a poorly boy. We now know why he has been fractious and more grizzly than normal over the last few days as yesterday evening we discovered the first spots and today we went to the NHS drop-in centre who confirmed that Alex has chicken pox. This means that this coming week is going to be an interesting juggling act between work (three grants to write before Christmas) and looking after Alex because Tim is too ill to take him all the time. Such is life.
Despite not being well we have had a nice weekend with Alex, playing with cars, trains, stickers, drawing etc. Yesterday evening we went for a run around the park as he needed some fresh air and Tim needed some sleep. I dressed him up nice and warm, and he decided he wanted to wear a scarf and the only one we could find was mine so he wore it the whole time! Alex enjoyed it for the most part, coming down the slide, crawling through the tunnel, scooting round on the scooter and generally having a nice time, although he was a lot more tired than normal (unsurprising now we know what is wrong with him). Today we went to the NHS drop in and confirmed our suspicions and this afternoon we played outside again, even though it was freezing - we can't go anywhere indoors as he is still infectious. We may be able to get away with unpopular parks out of the usual hours as the infection is airborne, but we must be considerate of others. I think the poor little thing is going to be really bored by the end of the week! Crafting wise I have taken a break from Christmas and continued to scrapbook my childhood. This first page followed a sketch by Lyn on Quirky Crafts Forum and is entitled 'Snow Day'. It uses almost entirely elements and papers from the Cosmo Cricket Jolly By Golly range. The snowflake brads are Papermania. The journalling reads 'Me with my snowman, built in the front garden at Barr with the help of friends and my seaside bucket. Aged 4'. The second page fits with the challenge from Scrap and Stamp which is to scrapbook yourself. It is entitled 'St John's my first school' and uses the Basic Grey Recess papers and stickers, Just Rite (alphabet), Woodware (star) and Tanda (compass) stamps with Adirondack and Distress inks. Part of the challenge was to include your own hand-writing, which I used for journalling and for writing a few of the things I remember from school round the edge of the matting (marbles, dancing, learning, off-ground touch, drawing). The journalling reads 'St John's, Taunton, was my first school. I attended there for two years from pre-school aged 4 (left hand photo) to Kindergarten (right hand photo). I had the smae teacher, Mrs Gerrard, who I thought was wonderful, and my best friend was Jane Drummond. Sadly the school is now a carpark'. I would love to know what you all think. Have a great week everyone.

Cuddles!

Alex is being so sweet at the moment. He is in a really cuddly mood and runs up to me or Tim saying 'Hello Mummy' or 'Hello Daddy' and then saying 'Can I have cuddle please'. He especially likes big squeezy hugs which is lovely. No complaints from me! Don't you just love those amazing blue eyes? His language is continuing to improve and we have so much fun with different imaginative games, although anything to do with cars or trains is favourite. Crafting wise I have made several cards this week. This card was for my boss's birthday and followed the Sketch and stash challenge for this week. The majority of elements on the card were freebies from magazines, or gifts from people that have sat in my stash for ages. The only new thing was the peel offs. The next card is for my bridesmaid and followed the Sketch Saturday sketch and used K&Co papers and dimensional stickers. The final card actually fits with seven different challenges! (1) Daring cardmakers to use mostly white with a hint of another colour (2) Crafty cardmakers to use non traditional Christmas colours (3) This weeks CPS sketch (4) Kaboodle Doodles snowflake challenge (5) SCSC Christmas Tree challenge (6) Spoonful of sugar non traditional colours challenge and (7) Cuttlebug spot Winter theme. Not bad going for one card! I also made a scrapbook layout following Stuck?! Sketches 1st December sketch. This also fits with the theme from Scrap and Stamp which is 'Autumn Traditions'. We don't really have many autumn traditions, but Wet Weather Walks are probably the main one hence this layout. I used Inkadinkado stamps, papers and cardstock from Bazzil and Basic Grey and Alphabet stickers from Creative Imaginations. The journalling reads 'Alex was quite happy to play in the park during a torrential downpour while Mummy hid under the trees!'. I would love to know what you all think of my crafting. I'm off to London for work tomorrow so not sure when I will next get the chance to craft. Have a nice rest of the week everyone.

Strange weather!

Firstly an apology for not updating on Friday...I was full of cold and not feeling up to anything much spent the afternoon entertaining a very bored Alex who hadn't been allowed to go to nursery due to a slight, very mild stomach upset. By Friday afternoon he was fine and bored so in need of some rough and tumble fun! Yesterday when we woke up in the morning it was snowing! I couldn't believe it. Despite the weather we went to Coventry to see my best friend from Uni...I don't get to see her anywhere near often enough so it was wonderful. Alex was in small boy heaven playing with all their cars and being entertained by Christopher. After lunch we got the train track out and Alex and Owain enjoyed pushing the trains round the track. Today although the weather was miserable this morning and we had a bout of sleet and then hail, by the afternoon it had cleared up so we had a cold trip to the park which we both enjoyed. Alex especially liked going through the puddle on his scooter. We came home slightly early though when he fell over in a very deep puddle, completely soaking his trousers...he wasn't too upset by it fortunately. I have done very little crafting over the past few days...I made these Christmas tags for a swap on the Quirky Crafts forum. These actually fit with the papertake weekly challenge of 'Christmas Crackers'. I also made a scrapbook layout following this weeks unscripted sketch, Basic Grey, Cosmo Cricket & Bazzill cardstock, Inkadinkadoo stamps, Angel kiss flowers and leaves. The photos were taken this summer. The title is 'Waterfall' and the journalling reads 'For Alex the most exciting walks are those involvin waterfalls. Every fall of water no matter how small or large is greated with shouts of joy and exctement and we have to stop and watch for a while before walking on saying 'Bye Bye waterfall'. Have a great week everyone.
